The Writer in Residence programme provides valuable, paid, publishing opportunities online and in print for outstanding arts writers. It invites resident writers to engage with the programme as they choose and with the aim of publishing thoughts and essays that open up wider contextual debate surrounding the issues and themes explored through Jerwood Visual Arts’ projects. This writing provides featured artists with much-valued critical reflection and context on their work and exhibitions.
Writers work remotely and engage with the programme through exhibition and event attendance and contact with curators, artists and the Jerwood Visual Arts team. Writers are asked to deliver, on average, a response or activity every four weeks. However, it is appreciated that more ambitious activities may take up more time and the expected workload is adopted accordingly. The residency programme is managed by Harriet Cooper, Head of Programme, and Lauren Houlton, Gallery Manager.
We are currently seeking applications for the first residency of 2019, running from January – June 2019. The writer will respond to the following exhibitions:
Jerwood Solo Presentations: 16 January – 10 March 2019. Three new commissions. Artists to be announced shortly.
Jerwood/FVU Awards 2019: Going, Gone: 3 April – 2 June 2019. Two new moving-image commissions. Artists to be announced shortly.
The successful Writer in Residence applicant will receive an award of £750 (VAT inclusive).
There is additional funding available for writers based outside of London. This is to cover travel expenses to attend the private views of both exhibitions and a number of events.
