New Writer in residence announced

7/Dec/2011

Jerwood Visual Arts (JVA) is delighted to announce that the fourth JVA Writer in Residence is Gareth Evans.

Gareth will begin his four month residency in January 2012 and will critically respond to exhibitions Jerwood Encounters: Formed thoughts (17 January – 26 February) and Jerwood/Film & Video Umbrella Award: Tomorrow Never Knows: (14 March – 22 April). He will work primarily on the JVA blog (blog.jerwoodvisualarts.org), posting thoughts and essays that open up wider contextual debate surrounding the issues and themes raised in the JVA programme with a focus on national and international issues and trends.  For more information on the exhibitions visit www.jerwoodvisualarts.org

Gareth Evans
works as a writer, editor, independent moving image and event curator and is Co-Director of innovative production agency Artevents (www.artevents.info). In 2008, he was awarded one of five major Breakthrough Grants by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation aimed at supporting exceptional arts entrepreneurs. The grant has enabledGareth to curate and produce The Re-Enchantment, a three year project developing artists’ responses to place across the UK through four original commissions. One of these, Patience (After Sebald), the new feature documentary by Grant Gee, will be released by Soda Pictures in January 2012 and by Cinema Guild in the USA in April 2012. Gareth has curated many international film seasons and festivals, including the major season John Berger: Here Is Where We Meet, 2005 (www.johnberger.org) and All Power to the Imagination! 1968 and Its Legacies, 2008. From 2002 – 2009, he edited the international moving image journal Vertigo and now runs the small publishers Go Together Press as well as co-edits its cross arts magazine Artesian (www.gotogetherpress.com).

The JVA Writer in Residence scheme was created in 2010 to give emerging writers the opportunity to develop their critical and creative skills, and to provoke wider thought and discussion around the JVA exhibitions.
