During the period 2003 to 2008 the Jerwood Photography Awards identified the most innovative artist photographers emerging within the UK. The Awards were organised annually by Portfolio Magazine and financially supported by Jerwood Charitable Foundation.
The Awards were selected by a changing group of curators, artists and writers. All 29 winners were recent graduates from educational institutions across the UK, their highly divergent, distinctive and stimulating work representing the finest photographic output from young graduates. The winners each received awards of £2,500, their work was published in Portfolio Magazine, and shown in an exhibition at Jerwood Space, London, followed by a UK tour.
Portfolio Magazine, in conjunction with the Jerwood Charitable Foundation, has now published NEW LIGHT, a casebound 136-page book featuring the work of the Award winners in a thematic structure. The book is introduced by Roanne Dods, former Director of Jerwood Charitable Foundation, with an essay by Martin Barnes, Senior Curator, Photographs, Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
